Marian T. Ryan Appointed Middlesex District Attorney

WOBURN -- Marian T. Ryan has been appointed to be the next Middlesex District Attorney by Governor Deval Patrick.

"I am humbled by the responsibility which the Governor has entrusted to me," said Ryan. "I am thrilled to be leading the Office where I have spent my entire professional career and I look forward to continuing its long tradition of excellence."

Ryan has worked as a Middlesex County assistant district attorney for more than thirty years. She has risen through the ranks of the office, serving under 5 different District Attorneys, as a District Court supervisor, a Superior Court trial team captain, and as the Chief of the Domestic Violence and Elder/Disabled Units. Most recently, she has served as General Counsel and Chief of the Elder and Disabled Unit under former District Attorney Gerry Leone.

Throughout her career, she has prosecuted hundreds of cases, including that of Walter Emery, a case which had remained unsolved for more than 20 years until he was convicted in 2007 for the murder of a mother of three. She has also briefed and argued more than 40 cases in the Appeals Court and the Supreme Judicial Court. Ryan has been a passionate advocate for the most vulnerable victims, including the elderly and developmentally disabled people who have been taken advantage of financially and physically abused.

She has also been actively engaged in the Office's outreach and training efforts, and has developed and led programs on work place violence prevention and school safety.

Ryan has been an adjunct professor at Emmanuel College and Wentworth Institute, and is currently teaching at Lasell College.

She is a graduate of Boston College Law School and a past recipient of the school's David S. Nelson Public Service Award. She received her undergraduate degree from Emmanuel College.

Governor Patrick Appoints Marian T. Ryan as Middlesex County District Attorney

BOSTON - Tuesday, April 23, 2013 - Governor Deval Patrick today named Middlesex District Attorney's (DA) Office General Counsel Marian T. Ryan as Middlesex County DA.

Ryan will assume responsibility for all Middlesex County DA's office operations and fills the vacancy created by the departure of Middlesex County DA Gerard Leone.

"Marian brings a great wealth of experience as a prosecutor generally and in the Middlesex County DA's office in particular," said Governor Patrick.

With over 30 years of experience in the Middlesex District Attorney's Office, Ryan most recently served as General Counsel and Chief of the Middlesex DA's Elder and Disabled Unit under outgoing Middlesex County DA Leone. She has extensive and varied experience in both the prosecution of homicide and other felony cases as well as in the development and implementation of prevention and outreach initiatives in communities throughout Middlesex County. Ryan is a member of the Middlesex District Attorney's Office Senior Leadership Team and has been intimately involved in the legislative, personnel, training and budgetary processes of the Office. She has tried hundreds of cases in the District and Superior Courts and briefed and argued over 40 cases in the Appeals Court and the Supreme Judicial Court.

During her 34 years of service at the Middlesex County DA's Office, Ryan has forged strong professional relationships with the criminal defense bar, the judiciary, community groups, police departments and other public safety personnel, the probation department, mental health professionals, social service agencies and other advocacy groups throughout the county that will bring a depth of knowledge and experience to her role as Middlesex County DA.

Ryan has taught as an adjunct professor at Emmanuel College and Wentworth College, and currently teaches at Lasell College.

Ryan is a graduate of Emmanuel College and Boston College Law School. While at Boston College Law School, Ryan was a student attorney at the legal assistance bureau. She lives in Belmont with her husband and has two children.

Ryan replaces Acting Middlesex DA Michael Pelgro, who was appointed after the departure of Middlesex DA Gerry Leone. An election to select the next DA will occur in 2014, the next biennial election.

"I am humbled by the responsibility which the Governor has entrusted to me," said Ryan. "I am thrilled to be leading the Office where I have spent my entire professional career and I look forward to continuing its long tradition of excellence."

"I commend the Governor for his selection of Marian Ryan as the Middlesex District Attorney," said former Middlesex DA Leone. "Marian has spent her entire legal career serving and protecting the people of Middlesex County.

I spent an hour yesterday getting to know Marian Ryan, the new district attorney for Middlesex County. She was appointed by Gov. Patrick to fill the unexpired term of DA Gerry Leone. She plans to seek election in 2014, and if history is any guide, will face no opposition.

As she was leaving, I told her I'd been interviewing Middlesex DAs since Scott Harshbarger (1983-91). She had me beat, she said. She's been in the Middlesex DA's office since John Droney, Harshbarger's predecessor. She's been working in the DA's office for 34 years, and it shows.

Like her predecessors, she's reluctant to give the press straight answers on investigations in progress. We questioned her about a recent police shooting in Ashland, about the Marathon bombings, about the shooting of Tamerlan Tsarnaev's friend by an FBI agent, about the Waltham triple-murder the New York Times says today the DA's office didn't exactly break a sweat trying to solve. In patient, friendly terms, she refused to say anything.

I asked her if she supported any changes in mandatory minimum sentences, a longtime interest of mine. A lot of other states, especially ones run by Republicans, are way ahead of Massachusetts at enacting "smart on crime" reforms, but the Bay State DAs have resisted even minor reforms here. She hemmed and hawed a little, giving no reason to think she was pro-reform (as opposed to Martha Coakley, who talks a good game on sentencing reform but has done little about it).

Someone asked about marijuana, and Ryan said she'd seen an increase in marijuana sales and marijuana-related violence as dealers fight for a growing market, thanks to decriminalization. She pointed to a recent bust of someone with 100 pounds of weed in Ashland and another in Malden.
